Groom's Responsibilities

You proposed . . . what do you do next?

Did you think all you had to do was show up looking great in a tuxedo and mumble a couple words? Although the bride does most of the planning, the groom definitely has specific responsibilities.

Attendants
The traditional role of the attendants is very different in an LDS wedding. Attendants generally help with the ceremony activities, but since the ceremony takes place in the temple, their role is significantly smaller.

A groom should choose his best man and groomsmen quickly after announcing his engagement. The best man organizes the bachelor party, helps the groom the day of the wedding, and sometimes helps with wedding plans. Groomsmen can serve as greeters at the reception, but generally just stand in the receiving line with the best man.

Attendants Attire
The groom selects the attire for the best man and groomsmen, and they should match in formality. Each attendant is responsible for renting their own clothing, but the groom usually picks up the tab.

Guest List
The groom is responsible for putting together his side of the guest list. The number of guest should be flexible to accommodate the bride's budget.

Wedding Bands
Looking at wedding bands is something the bride and groom should do together. However, the one purchased can still be a surprise. Engravings are very popular and can include initials, the wedding date, or a special phrase.

Marriage License and Blood Test
The groom is responsible for making the appointment for a wedding license and arranging for blood tests if the state requires it.

Transportation
The groom is responsible for arranging transportation from the ceremony and reception. When selecting a transportation service, i.e. limousine or carriage, be sure the contract includes the cost, length of service, and the driver's attire.

Gifts
To thank his attendants for their support, the groom will want to give each a gift either at the luncheon or reception. Gifts can vary in price and size, but personalized, thoughtful gifts are always the best.

The groom also traditionally gives his bride a wedding gift. This gift can be given before or after the wedding and should be something very special.

Honeymoon
Today, couple's usually prefer to plan their honeymoon together, but the groom is responsible for the majority of the planning and reservations. This provides the groom with an opportunity to plan some special surprises, like a room with a view or a romantic dinner for two.

Assisting the Bride
The groom should feel free to help the bride in the wedding plans to whatever extent he feels comfortable. Some brides will choose to do everything themselves, but others long for the feedback of their fiancé. It is most important for the groom to be understanding and supportive.
